Roshan Nathanial during his professional boxing and international matchmaking activities.
In professional boxing, the people shaping a fighter’s career are not always the ones standing in the corner during a fight. Behind every competitive opportunity is a network of coaches, managers, promoters, matchmakers and technical officials who help determine where and against whom a boxer competes.
For Roshan Nathanial, that broader role has developed over years of involvement in boxing. His career has evolved from coaching and athlete development into professional boxing management, international matchmaking and technical direction, eventually connecting Indian fighters with opportunities across multiple boxing markets.
Today, Nathanial is identified by the Indian Boxing Council as an International Matchmaker and Technical Director for DJMC Events/Boxing UAE, while DJMC’s own platform lists him as its Match Maker and Technical Director.
The Foundation: Coaching and Athlete Development
Nathanial’s career began with the fundamentals of boxing: training athletes, developing their skills and helping fighters prepare for competition.
That coaching background became an important foundation for the roles he would later assume outside the gym. Understanding a fighter’s technical ability, experience, strengths and limitations is particularly relevant when determining which competitive opportunities are appropriate.
His involvement with athletes such as Urvashi Singh, Sachin Dekwal, Sarjubala Devi and NT Lalbiakkima demonstrates the connection between his coaching and management roles.
DJMC’s athlete profiles identify Nathanial as boxing coach as well as manager or matchmaker for Dekwal, Devi and Lalbiakkima.
The transition was therefore not a move away from coaching, but an expansion of his role around the athlete.
From the Gym to the Professional Boxing Business
As Nathanial became more involved in professional boxing, his responsibilities expanded beyond training.
Professional boxing operates through an interconnected system. Fighters require opponents, promoters need suitable matchups, events need technical planning, and athletes need career management. A coach who understands the fighter can therefore bring valuable insight into the matchmaking and event-planning process.
Nathanial’s work with Team Roshan Sports Promotion became part of that transition.
The Indian Boxing Council reports that Team Roshan was established in 2019 and has conducted professional boxing shows involving fighters from India and other countries, including events in Dubai, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Thailand.
The development of the organisation gave Nathanial an additional platform from which to work with athletes and participate in professional boxing promotion.
Entering International Matchmaking
Matchmaking became one of the most significant developments in Nathanial’s career.
In a professional boxing event, matchmaking is more than simply pairing two available fighters. Weight class, records, experience, fighting styles, titles and the competitive stage of each athlete all have to be considered.
Nathanial’s international matchmaking work is documented through DJMC events.
Tapology lists him as the matchmaker for the September 2021 Middle East Crown Series event in Dubai, which was co-promoted by DJMC Events. The card included fighters from several countries and featured Sachin Dekwal against Kenya’s Nicholas Mwangi.
This represented an important shift in his professional role: from preparing fighters for competition to helping determine the competitions themselves.
The Dubai Chapter
Dubai became an important part of Nathanial’s development as an international boxing professional.
The Indian Boxing Council identifies him as International Matchmaker and Technical Director for DJMC Events/Boxing UAE and says he oversees the technical aspects of boxing events organised by the company.
DJMC similarly identifies Nathanial as Match Maker/Technical Director within its boxing team.
Working in Dubai exposed Nathanial to a wider international boxing environment, bringing together fighters, promoters and teams from different countries.
It also created opportunities to combine his understanding of athlete development with the practical demands of professional event organisation.
Matchmaking and Athlete Management Working Together
One of the defining features of Nathanial’s career has been the overlap between matchmaking and athlete management.
Sachin Dekwal’s DJMC profile lists Nathanial as both manager/matchmaker and boxing coach. Sarjubala Devi’s profile carries the same combination of roles, while NT Lalbiakkima’s profile also identifies Nathanial in both capacities.
This combination gives the role a different perspective.
A matchmaker working with an athlete’s long-term development has an understanding of where that boxer currently stands and what kind of contest may contribute to the next stage of the career.
For Nathanial, coaching knowledge and matchmaking therefore became interconnected parts of professional boxing.
Taking Indian Boxers Into International Competition
The next stage of the career involved creating opportunities for Indian boxers on international cards.
A notable example came in Colombo in November 2022, when Indian fighters including Urvashi Singh, Sarjubala Devi and Sachin Dekwal featured on a professional boxing event promoted by DJMC and Nathanial.
The Indian Boxing Council described Nathanial as International Matchmaker and Technical Director of DJMC for the event, which featured eight international fights.
The event also included a WBC Asia Continental title defence for Dekwal and represented a significant cross-border boxing event involving Indian and Sri Lankan talent.
Times of India reported at the time that Sarjubala had signed a fight-management contract with Nathanial, while the Colombo card included Dekwal’s title defence. The report also identified Nathanial as Technical Director of DJMC.
This illustrates how his responsibilities had expanded: he was no longer involved only in the preparation of individual fighters, but also in the structure and delivery of international professional boxing events.
A Broader International Network
Nathanial’s work has extended beyond a single country.
The Indian Boxing Council says Team Roshan has conducted shows in Dubai, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Thailand and India, featuring professional boxers from different parts of the world.
That international reach has become an important part of his professional identity.
For an Indian boxing professional, working across different markets can create connections between athletes, promoters and boxing organisations. It also provides exposure to different approaches to professional boxing and event organisation.
The result is a role that increasingly sits between athlete development and international boxing operations.
From Matchmaker to Technical Director
The title of Technical Director reflects another stage in Nathanial’s career development.
While matchmaking focuses primarily on creating appropriate contests, technical direction involves a broader understanding of the boxing event itself.
DJMC describes Nathanial specifically as Match Maker/Technical Director, while the Indian Boxing Council says he oversees the technical aspects of DJMC’s boxing events.
That combination means his experience as a coach can be applied at an event level.
Understanding fighters, their preparation and their competitive requirements can contribute to decisions surrounding the structure and technical delivery of professional boxing shows.
Building a Promotion Platform
The development of Team Roshan Sports Promotion added another dimension to Nathanial’s career.
The Indian Boxing Council describes Team Roshan as an organisation established in 2019 to provide professional boxers with a platform to showcase their abilities and advance their careers.
The organisation’s activities have included professional events in India and overseas, bringing together athletes from different countries.
This represented an evolution from working primarily with individual boxers to participating in the creation of platforms where multiple athletes could compete.
The shift is significant because promotion, matchmaking and coaching are closely connected in professional boxing, but require different responsibilities and perspectives.
The Career Evolution in Perspective
Nathanial’s professional journey can therefore be viewed through several connected stages.
Coach. Developing fighters and understanding the technical side of boxing.
Athlete manager. Helping guide professional fighters and their competitive careers.
Matchmaker. Connecting athletes with appropriate opponents and opportunities.
Technical Director. Taking responsibility for technical aspects of professional boxing events.
Sports promoter. Helping create platforms through which professional boxers can compete and develop.
These roles have not replaced one another. Instead, they have increasingly overlapped.
That combination has become one of the defining characteristics of Nathanial’s career.
Continuing the Journey in Australia
The international dimension of Nathanial’s career has also continued into Australia.
His involvement in the Melbourne boxing scene has added another market to a career that has already included India, the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.
The World Boxing Council reported in July 2023 that Nathanial was named a WBC Cares Ambassador for India, recognising his involvement with DJMC and its wider charitable boxing initiatives.
Later that year, the Melbourne Charity Showdown brought together boxing and the WBC Cares mission, further connecting his international boxing network with activity in Australia.
The move also complements his continuing work as a coach and boxing professional in Melbourne.
More Than a Change of Job Title
The evolution from boxing coach to international matchmaker is not simply a progression through different job titles.
It reflects a broader understanding of how professional boxing careers are built.
A coach sees the fighter from the perspective of preparation. A manager considers the athlete’s career. A matchmaker looks at competitive compatibility. A technical director considers the event as a whole. A promoter works to create the platform on which those elements come together.
Nathanial’s career has increasingly brought those perspectives together.
His experience working with athletes, organising and matchmaking international contests, and participating in boxing promotion has positioned him within several parts of the professional boxing ecosystem.
For Indian boxing, that cross-border experience has also created a route through which athletes can move beyond domestic competition and participate in international professional events.
From Coaching Fighters to Connecting the Boxing World
Roshan Nathanial’s career demonstrates how a role in boxing can evolve as experience and opportunity grow.
What began with coaching and athlete development expanded into management, matchmaking and technical direction, eventually developing into involvement with professional boxing promotion across multiple countries.
The common thread throughout those stages has remained the athlete.
Whether preparing a boxer in training, managing a professional career, selecting an opponent or helping organise an international event, Nathanial’s work has increasingly focused on creating the conditions in which fighters can compete and progress.
That evolution—from coach to manager, from manager to matchmaker, and from matchmaker to international boxing professional—has become a defining part of Roshan Nathanial’s journey through the sport.
